Milkshake Madness / Kelly Haskew
My intention for my first project is simple and forward. The idea was to mesh two popular items of consumption into one obvious statement about the state of human health targeting Americans. The combination of the cartoon style milkshake evokes a sense of immediate pleasure. In its typical form it would be enjoyed as a desert, an obvious form of pleasure, even a treat. But now, in our modern American society it is used as a money-making consumerist tactic. With such successful chain companies such as Smoothie King or Wal-mart, the integration of popular vitamins and energy boosters into such deserts or treats has made perfect sense in our fast-paced society. This image is cut and dry, however, it doesn’t offer any brilliant effects to lure consumer taste buds. On the contrary, it actually offers the raw information, the facts, that the idea of a pill filled cup is unfortunately, or in some cases fortunately, easily accessible nutritional intake. It is not sugar coated with any notable flavor, it is black and white mental and physical wellness in a cup. I hope that the viewer will take away a sense of concern for what is going into their bodies when they are confronted with buying or selling such a treat! The mental and physical wellness of the general public is a definite issue in our society and should be taken seriously. Hopefully the playfulness of this image will make the decision a much easier one when running hastily through life and through the supermarket.
